The virtual dancehall that is the world of electronic music is a crowded and disparate place, full of talents great and small. Those who stand out in the mayhem are those with electric talents and eclectic personalities. One or the other will usually suffice, but occasionally someone comes along with both.
Meet Aradia. She has both.
The Seattle-based singer/songwriter has culled an original sound that can only be called roktronika; born of a love for new wave, trip-hop, rock and hardcore Electronica. The daughter of a musician/music therapist and a ballet dancer, Aradia was immersed in the world of music. Like a fish in water, Aradia thrived in her environment. She began playing piano at 3 years old, flute at 8 and guitar at 14. All the while Aradia was plying her voice to any song she could find.
Born in the New York City metropolitan area, Aradia eventually enrolled in the Aaron Copland School of Music at Queens College. Disaffected with the petty politics of the classical music world, Aradia dropped out and dropped into the world of rock and roll. As part of Some Band she played regularly in New York City, including venues such as The Bitter End and The Wetlands.
Aradia took her next steps in L.A., meeting longtime collaborator and musical mentor Wirth Lawson. Together the two moved to Atlanta and formed Twelfth Planet, a mainstay in Atlanta clubs for the next three years. Aradia and Lawson wrote together; with his production skills building the perfect launching pad for Aradia’s electric stage presence and singular voice. This synergy of talents led the band to open for Muse, and later play for a crowd of 100,000 at the Chicago Auto Show.
Once Twelfth Planet had run its course, Aradia felt the call of the solo artist. Settling in Seattle, she has released a full-length album, Citizen of Earth. In 2014, 2 songs from the album were nominated for an HMMA Award, and Aradia was featured in Music Connection's Hot Unsigned Independent Artists list of 2014.
Aradia’s sound is unique, a blend of rock, pop, trip-hop and Electronica that recalls an otherworldly mix of Donna Summer, Trent Reznor, David Bowie and George Harrison. Her songwriting is driven by a deep intellect, but there is no pretention in Aradia’s nature. She writes as she speaks, in a simple and observational style that Occam would be proud of. Her voice is iconic; the kind that makes people stop what they are doing to find out who that voice is coming from. Aradia blends these into songs that have a vibrant originality and occasionally, shock value that has driven the careers of artists such as Madonna and Lady GaGa. At the heart of it all, however, Aradia’s mind never stops its cool and collected reflection of reality.
A powerhouse of independence and motivation, Aradia records all her own tracks with the occasional guest on guitar or bass), designs and makes her own show & photo shoot costumes, and does 100% of the graphic design for her websites and albums.
So while other artists dabbling or diving into electronic sounds struggle to marry the principals of technology and real life, Aradia carves up reality into musical packets and serves them hot and fresh to all comers. Her ability to illuminate moments large and small is distinctive, and she can bloody well knock you on your ass with her powerful arrangements or her voice. Aradia’s music isn’t a whim or a fad; it’s a life-altering experience.
